Just last month, we told you that writer/director Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) had reportedly met with Marvel Studios to pitch them his take for Iron Man 3 to take over the franchise from Jon Favreau who exited the project back in December to helm the Walt Disney Pictures film, Magic Kingdom.
Only one week later and Shane Black was in final negotiations to helm the third installment in the Iron Man franchise. At the time is wasn’t clear whether or not Black would write as well as direct.
Now, AICN reports that Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures were unhappy with the direction that Iron Man 2 took, and this latest installment will not be “two men in iron suits fighting each other.” Shane Black now hopes to make a Tom Clancy-style thriller with Tony Stark fighting a “real world” villain.
Black appeared at the Omaha Film Festival last weekend and confirmed that he will be writing this third installment of the Iron Man franchise, and is scheduled to meet with Robert Downey Jr. later this week to collaborate on the storyline.
Iron Man 3 is slated to go into production in 2012, after production on The Avengers is complete, and according to Black, there will be no other characters from the Marvel comic universe appearing in Iron Man 3. The plan is to make a self-contained Iron Man story. Marvel will reportedly complete their character cross-overs after the lead up to the release of The Avengers.
Iron Man 3 is currently slated to hit theaters on May 3rd, 2013.
