Eureka “Ship Happens” (Season 3, Episode 14) #314
Original airdate: August 14, 2009
Summary:
The ship that has arrived at Eureka in the last episode has another surprise- its pilot! This ship, The Columbus, was an interstellar exploration project that Henry, Stark, and Kim worked on 20 years ago but was considered lost. This was originally an unmanned prototype, but when onboard organic computer was threatened, it grew a clone of one of its creators, Kim Yamazaki, to preserve its data & continue on its mission.
After the emergence of Kim 2.0, a strange electrocution death has Carter and the Eureka team puzzled. When Zane is almost electrocuted in the same manner while running tests on Kim 2.0, it seems that Kim 2.0 may be responsible.
They discover that it is actually a virus that’s causing these internal electrical storms, but this virus is a biological virus with binary coding that spread from the ship’s original onboard organic computer! When the computer was making Kim 2.0 to continue in its place, it programmed an antigen to the virus. Kim 2.0 alone is immune and helps Henry devise a solution.
Points to Know:
- Kim 2.0 gave Henry a total head-trip. The real Kim Yamazaki had died in an explosion involving the Artifact last year so having someone that appears to be her in the flesh again presents a whole Cylon-type quandary for Henry. Is she really a person? Is any part of her the real Kim? By the end of the ep, Henry comes to a level of comfortability with Kim 2.0 in being able to relive the joy of collaborating with Kim on an intellectual level.
- The data Kim 2.0 has brought back shows the presence of four earth-like planets within ten light-years of Earth!
- Jo’s reaction to Zane’s near death and learning that Kim 2.0 may be the cause sent her into ‘Kill’ mode. Strangely enough, Kim 2.0 agrees with putting herself down in order to not harm any one else.
- Tess and Carter have their first date of watching a meteor shower together at the end of the ep. They are so perfect for each other!
- Allison is having a little girl! Her relationship with Carter is still a solid, yet tender relationship.
Commentary:
- Odd coincidence to have electrocution to be the method of death in both Warehouse 13 (Burnout) and Eureka eps, airing last week!
- Tess’ perspective on the show is refreshing! I can’t help but be caught up in her enthusiasm for the ship’s data to possibly contain the secrets to the universe!
- Fargo, here again, begins to show his assertive side, however dweeby. He is even a suspect in the first death! Carter would even bet $5 on Fargo in a cage match.
- Does Kim 2.0 not need to eat or relieve itself? Just how human or not is she?
- If every cell in Kim 2.0 has data, doesn’t taking samples of her blood present itself as a loss of data?
Best Moments:
Fargo freaking about possibly being the cause of the electrocution death: “I’m going to spend the rest of my life President of the Attica Physics Club!”
Jo slaps Fargo, “Man up, Fargo!”
**********
Tess talking to Carter about Henry and Kim 2.0: “The oldest story in the world- boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy meets computer.”
