On the night of July 9th, a tousle occurred in Times Square between caped superheroes and New York police officers. Superman and Batman were confronted by police in Times Square on 43rd Street to verify if they had licenses to perform in costume in public. Superman appeared to be panhandling.
Superman, aka Maksim Katsnelson, 23, of The Bronx, did not have any ID when asked and “freaked out and punched the girl cop in the face”, according to Batman.
Witness, Ryan McCormick had this to recount:
“The Man of Steel didn’t go down with just two officers, it took seven officers! He was putting up a good fight. Little kids were like, ‘Mommy, it’s Superman!’ “
Batman, aka Frank Frisoli from Maine, was cuffed but not arrested or charged because he ‘didn’t cause any problems’.
Superman was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
Maksim and Frank had donned super hero costumes for shits and giggles and were “just having a good time”. When they did not provide ID to the officers confronting them, Superman exited stage left, screaming, “I’m not getting arrested.” That is when police took Superman down.
Police let Batman go- in the custody of another costumed tourist, Melba Williams, dressed as the Statue of Liberty.
