Earlier this week, we told you that the final chapter of the Harry Potter saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, advanced to the number three highest grossing film worldwide. In a matter of days, this juggernaut of a film has broken yet another record, moving past Transformers: Dark of the Moon to be crowned the highest grossing film of 2011 thus far.
According to Variety, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has taken in $344.8 million domestically and $801.5 million internationally, bringing it to a global total of $1.146 billion.
Warner International President Veronika Kwan-Rubinek called the film a “global phenomenon:”
“‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′ can truly be called a global phenomenon. The filmmakers and cast, who dedicated their talents to the success of these films for over a decade, share in this piece of cinema history.”
Dan Fellman, President of Warner Domestic Distribution, acknowledged the film’s accomplishment during the summer blockbuster season:
“In a crowded and very competitive summer, it is a tribute to both the film and the people behind it that moviegoers are still turning out to enjoy it — whether for the first time or for a repeat viewing.”
