GREEN LANTERN: Suit Will Be Done In CG, Tenney And Sanders Join The Cast

You can’t wait to see Ryan Reynolds in the Green Lantern costume, can you? Well, too bad! The costume will reportedly be entirely computer-generated. The filmmakers behind the Warner Bros./DC Comics superhero movie have designed a motion-capture suit with tracking LEDs for Reynolds to wear on set. Green Lantern’s recognizable green and black outfit will then be added in post-production by the visual effects team.

According to /Film,

“The suit that Ryan wears on set is a grey tracking motion/performance capture suit with led lights. I’ve heard that Ryan Reynolds has been joking on set that Warner Bros is going to make him into a Na’vi when the final cut is released. His joke, not mine. The Green Lantern suit you will see in the final film will be almost entirely created using computers”.

“Remember, the Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien — it needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit. This was a chance for [costume designer Ngila] Dickson to do something different. You also have to consider that Hal changes into the suit multiple times in mid scene, and the cg also allows him to do this”.

Among other details they reported, the leaked set photo of the silver ship is indeed Abin Sur’s crashed spaceship and Temura Morrison looks legit as Abin Sur, although his head isn’t as elongated as in the concept art photos leaked awhile back.

Also, in other Green Lantern news…

Jon Tenney, who currently stars in the TNT network’s police drama The Closer, has announced that he will join the cast of the Martin Campbell directed film, and will play the character of Martin H. Jordan in the film adaptation of the DC Comics series.

Tenney said,

“The Closer is letting me shoot off in June a little bit, and I’m doing a little picture called Green Lantern”, Ryan Reynolds is the Green Lantern, and when he is a young boy, like 11, I’m his father.”

Jay O. Sanders (The Day After Tomorrow,Revolutionary Road) has also joined the cast and will play Carl Ferris, the father of Carol Ferris and owner of Ferris Air, where Hal Jordan works as a test pilot prior to acquiring a certain power ring.

Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong, Peter Sarsgaard, Blake Lively, Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett hits theaters on June 17, 2011.

[The Shakedown]

Wow, some people around the web are really freaking out about this whole CG Lantern suit. Considering the fact that in the IRON MAN movies, when Stark is suited up in the armor and moving, or in some cases just shown head-to-toe with helmet closed, it’s mostly done in CG … So, I really don’t see the problem.

Besides, the Lanterns aren’t like Superman.. they don’t hop in a phone booth and change into their uniforms. Since the power ring generates the Corps. member’s uniform over whatever they happen to be wearing and vanishes at will, CG is really the only way to do that properly.
