GOLDEN GLOBES: Jim Parsons Wins But Other Sci-Fi Noms Go Home Empty-Handed

This past Sunday night’s 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards was a fantastic night for The Social Network, Glee, and The Kids are Alright, but aside from the notable win by Jim Parsons for Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical, sci-fi / fantasy nominees went home empty-handed.

How could Christopher Nolan’s Inception, RED, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and AMC’s The Walking Dead not have won anything? The Hollywood Foreign Press Association definitely had their eyes on more reality-based entertainment as exhibited by the number of The Social Network wins and Al Pacino and Claire Danes’ wins for their portrayals of suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian and autistic, livestock scientist Temple Grandin respectively.

Show host, Ricky Gervais’ mean-spirited style of hosting “pushed the envelope and occasionally went too far.” Aside from gape-mouthed “wow, did Ricky really just say that?” moments throughout the show, it was still an entertaining award show that sneaked intimate peeks at the stars during the commercial breaks (there was a great sneak at Angelina Jolie fixing Brad Pitt’s tie.) It was an incredibly voyeuristic experience.

But I digress, it was still an honor for our sci-fi genre favorites to be nominated, but it would have been great to have seen more than one win on our scoreboard! Jim Parsons can add his Golden Globe to the Emmy he won last year for his portrayal of Dr. Sheldon Cooper in Big Bang Theory. Oddly, the cast of The Big Bang Theory was stuffed back in a corner table nearly behind the stage. Curious placement, don’t you think? I hope that wasn’t the Hollywood equivalent of the kids’ table, Golden Globes!

Here is a full list of nominees and winners. Sci-fi nominees in bold and winners are underlined.
