The Golden Globes, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be awarded and broadcast live on Sunday, January 17, 2010 from The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.

The Hollywood Foreign Press announced its nominees for the Golden Globes this week and it looks like James Cameron’s “Avatar” has certainly made an impression:

“Avatar” is up for:

• Best Picture: Drama
• Best Director
• Best Original Score
• Best Original Song

Impressively, Neil Blomkamp’s “District 9” got a nomination for Best Screenplay.  This seems to me that Blomkamp has successfully broken his film out of the sci-fi box!

The Best Animated Feature Film category had a stronger scifi/fantasy genre showing with noms for: “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, “Coraline”, “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, “The Princess and the Frog”, and “Up”.

In the television categories, HBO’s vampire drama, “True Blood”, scored noms for:  Best Television Series- Drama and Best Actress in A Television Drama for Anna Paquin (who is also up for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie).

It’s also great to see Michael Emerson of ABC’s “Lost” to be up for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Role!
