Back in January, we brought you a story about Ivan Reitman and Sony Pictures sending the script for the long-gestating Ghostbusters III, written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (The Office), along with Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman off to Bill Murray for his stamp of approval.
At the time, an insider said that “The studio won’t even think about moving forward on a $150 million film unless Bill has a closed deal and a commitment, It’s too huge a risk to do any meaningful prep, hoping he shows up.”
On a recent episode of the Dennis Miller Radio show, Aykroyd hinted at some details about the film, including a statement about Murray’s involvement, what the original “Busters” are like these days, and a potential cast member that he favors for the new generation of the Ghostbusters.
Aykroyd hinted that they would begin production in 2012:
“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray, That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3’ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”
A bit about the plot and the state of the original team:
“My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac, He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.”
About a potential cast member:
“I like this guy Matthew Gray Gubler from the ‘Criminal Minds‘ show, But there’s going to be a casting. We’re going to see everyone that wants to do it. We’re going to need… three guys and a young woman.”
Ghostbusters III might to hit theaters at some point… maybe.
