Geoff Johns Talks New Aquaman Series

Over the weekend DC Comics writer Geoff Johns announced that he would be penning a new Aquaman comic after he wraps up the DCU event Brightest Day. This will be the character’s 7th title since his creation in 1941, and with Johns behind the wheel we’re guaranteed to see a King of Atlantis like we’ve never imagined.

The folks over at Newsarama got to sit down with Johns to get a few more details about the upcoming series. Johns has confirmed that Mera will be a constant companion to Aquaman, and the new Aqualad that was introduced in Brightest Day is connected to big things down the road that will effect the entire DCU. But, when it’s all said and done, why did Johns choose Aquaman as his next big project?

“I just know that there is a lot of potential in that character. I know there is untapped potential in that character and everything he’s about. I love that everybody knows who he is, but they don’t know a lot about him. And I just had ideas and stories for him.”

A lot of fans out there may think that we’ve already seen Johns’ version of Aquaman in Brightest Day. The writer promises that we haven’t seen anything yet.

“There are a lot of things that will happen in the book that people won’t expect. Brightest Day had a pretty straightforward superhero Aquaman story. That was to get him and Mera and Aqualad and Black Manta and everybody back on stage. Aquaman goes to the depths of Earth, and there are a lot of things we’ve never explored. The depths of the ocean are a frontier. You see it on the Discovery Channel, that they discover a new species on the bottom on the ocean all the time, and it’s a whole new world down there.”

Johns is best known for revitalizing the Green Lantern franchise, exploring new facets of the GL mythos that no one ever dreamed of. Whether or not he can do the same for Aquaman has yet to be seen, but he’s got a great foundation to build on.
