Fox Orders Pilot for THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN

Fox, the former home of Fringe and the future home of Sleepy Hollow and Almost Human, may be giving us yet another reason to be hanging around their channel in the somewhat near future, as Fox has given a put pilot order for a one-hour series based on Alan Moore‘s and Kevin O’Neill‘s comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Deadline first broke the news, further reporting that Moore, who wrote the comics series, and O’Neill, the illustrator, would not be involved in the new production. Michael Green, whose past credits include the very excellent series The River as well as Heroes, Smallville, and the Green Lantern movie, will serve as showrunner.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen began as a sort of Victorian era Avengers, incorporating fictional characters including Dracula, Captain Nemo, The Invisible Man and others. You may have seen the inconsistent but fun film adaptation from 2003 starring Sean Connery.

Not much else is known at this point, though it’s encouraging to note that “put pilot” means that the network will pay a substantial penalty if it doesn’t air the pilot. Some pilots, of course, languish without ever seeing the light of day. A put pilot agreement does not guarantee that the entire series will be ordered, however, as pilots are sometimes broadcast as “special events”.

Here’s hoping that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is excellent, and that a series order is warranted and given. Best of luck to all involved. We’ll keep you posted.
