Former ‘Witchblade’ Actress Yancy Butler Reveals Details Of Her ‘Kick-Ass’ Role

Years ago the original Witchblade, Sarah Pezzini, made the transition from mystical (and half-naked) armored warrior to civilian mom. Now, it seems, acting is imitating comics with the former star of TNT’s “Witchblade” television series Yancy Butler taking on a more matronly role in the movie adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s “Kick-Ass.”

In an interview with Comics Continuum, Butler discussed her roughly week-and-a-half trip to London in November during which time she filmed her scenes and took in the large scale production and its special effects.

“It’s amazing, I’ve never seen anything like that,” Butler said.

Joining a cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Chloe Mortez and Aaron Johnson, Butler plays Angie D’Amico, mother of the mysterious Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and wife of the villainous druglord Frank D’Amico. Her character has yet to appear in the “Kick-Ass” comic, but is described as similar to Edie Falco’s character Carmela Soprano of HBO’s “The Sopranos.”

Though it doesn’t look as though she’ll star in Top Cow’s developing “Witchblade” film, Butler fans can comfort themselves with the knowledge that she’s still taking her comic book roles seriously enough to check out the source material.

The actress caught up on the first four issues of “Kick-Ass” courtesy of director Matthew Vaughn prior to filming and, apparently, even seemed to enjoy Dave Lizewski’s ultraviolent antics.

“The trials and tribulations of a high-school kid trying to become the perfect super-hero are quite interesting – and comical,” Butler said.
