While it’s been 13 years since Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Randy Quaid saved our little blue planet from alien invaders they never really told us what happened after aliens destroyed everything and we destroyed the aliens, so is Independence Day ripe for a sequel… or two?
Director Roland Emmerich recently sat down for an interview and gave a brief explanation on what he wants to do.
What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc. Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.
And Emmerich has a title in mind:
“‘ID4-ever,’ Part I and II maybe?”
While there’s not yet a script, Emmerich says
“There’s an idea”
He said that when they move forward, Will Smith will most certainly be involved.
“The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don’t know how many years ago this was—twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago—and just continue where it ended.”
The original film ended with Pullman and Smith’s victory over the invading aliens. Presumably, over a decade later, the White House would have been rebuilt and civilization returned to some semblance of normalcy. What’s Smith’s military man been up to? Do the same alien baddies return, or do we get new ones? And, unless term limits have been abolished in this world, Pullman’s US prez will no longer be in office – how might he fit into the story, if at all?
Emmerich didn’t want to spill any plot details, but he promised
“one day we will do it and that the story will stay firmly on the planet. “It’s always about earth and that earth gets invaded,”
