Edward James Olmos Gives Spoilers About BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE PLAN

Edward James Olmos aka Admiral William Adama in the SyFy reboot of “Battlestar Galactica” directed the Cylon-centric prequel set to air tomorrow night at 9/8 C.

The Plan” follows the Cylons and their plan for human extinction.  In this prequel movie, there will be scenes that blend in seamlessly with established footage of season one of “Battlestar Galactica”.  Olmos talks about how they achieved continuity:

“Most of that footage is new, but it feels like it was shot and that you’ve seen it before.  That’s because we duplicated a lot of the situation and re-shot a lot of it. That had to feel as fresh as the stuff that was shot five years before. So it became a real issue and was brilliantly orchestrated by all the departments and all the actors.”

Other characters that BSG didn’t dwell on will take the spotlight in “The Plan”, including Olmos’ real life wife, Lymari Nadal, who plays a mechanic named Giana:

“In the scene with the chief in the storeroom when he comes in and meets the new knuckle-dragger, Giana, in walks Boomer and they have a little relationship, a triangle right there that happens.”

Interestingly enough, a great joy and complication in human life throws a wrench in Cylon life as well- love.  Olmos gives a spoiler to what made the Cylon’s perfect plan to destroy humans fail:

“What stopped that is one single human emotion that prevailed itself inside of the Giana/Simon story.  Love came in, and really no one, no machine, no human was ready for what happened. Love actually changed the course of what would have been the annihilation of both the human species and the termination of the Cylons also.”

“The Plan” matches BSG in epic quality.  Here Olmos talks about the Cylon destruction of other cities like Picon:

“Oh man, the destruction of those places.  To me, that first half hour is worth its weight in gold. It really puts the onus on exactly what went down, something that we imagined but we never thought we’d see. I wanted to go deeper, but we just couldn’t. We didn’t have the financial ability to do so.”

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” is indeed already on DVD.  SyFy’s airing will be an edited down version for time constraints and censorship for certain scenes displaying nudity.  The DVD’s runtime is one hour and fifty-two minutes.  The television broadcast will only be 88 minutes in length.
