This news follows earlier reports that the Rock signed on to star in an upcoming DC movie project. During SDCC this year the action star teased that said project was a Shazam movie and that he would play the titular hero. Nice misdirect, Rock! Variety also reports that Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer) will write the script.

Captain Marvel a.k.a. Shazam in DC’s New 52 line, is the alter ego of Billy Batson, a 13-year-old orphan who is granted incredible superpowers by a timeless wizard of the same name. Black Adam, an ancient Egyptian prince who was originally intended to wear the mantle of Shazam, is the counterpart to Captain Marvel.  A complex character, Black Adam has spent times on both sides of the law as a member of both the Justice Society and the Secret Society led by Lex Luthor. He has even sat the throne of his native land of Kahndaq, where he is both beloved and feared by his subjects for bringing, stability and prosperity while meting out harsh judgment to those he deems as aggressors.
