Dr. Horrible Has A Fan-Made Prequel: HORRIBLE TURN

HorribleTurn

Now available online is an hour-long, fan-made prequel to “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”, called “Horrible Turn: An Internet Musical”.  On the “Horrible Turn” website, you’ll notice this disclaimer running along the bottom of the vid:

“Any similarity to the characters created by Joss Whedon is, like, totally a coincidence. And by ‘coincidence’ we mean accidental. And by ‘accidental’ we mean fortunate. And by ‘fortunate’ we mean intentional. And by ‘intentional’ we mean unauthorized.”

Horrible Turn” follows the young Dr. Horrible’s arc from woo-ing his high school almost-love to his quest to save his high school from the Evil League of Evil.  Of course, this is a prequel so it concludes with… you guessed it, Billy’s ‘horrible turn’.  An unexpected dimension to the story is the explanation of Captain Hammer’s appeal.

Horrible Turn” is a product of fans in Houston, TX under the helmship of Chance McClain (director at 1560 The Game KGOW radio program) who directed and also wrote and composed for the internet musical as well. McClain is a fan of the original “Dr. Horrible” and of “the renegade way Joss Whedon and company went about putting it out…I, and later [the whole crew], wanted to hone our movie-making skills and thought this would be a fun way to do it.”  The film was self-funded- McClain adds “We probably should have put ‘tax refunds’ in the credits.”

The musical and theatrical backgrounds of the cast and crew shone through even though they had no previous film experience.  For a production done by a totally green group, this is an amazing achievement!  McClain says that the entire production from writing to wrap took about seven months and premiered at the historic River Oaks Theater in Houston on October 7, 2009.

McClain summarizes the experience of making “Horrible Turn”:

“This was a maiden voyage for every person involved.  We wanted to make something that honored Dr. Horrible and its fans.”

These are the great fans behind this fan-made and funded production:
