Last month, we brought you news that Harry Potter director David Yates would be teaming up with the BBC to adapt the iconic Brit sci-fi series, Doctor Who, for the big screen. Yates had previously stated that they would “start from scratch” for this movie, which raises the obvious question: Who would play the Doctor in this movie?
Steven Moffat, the current showrunner and also writer onboard Doctor Who when Russell T. Davies re-energized the franchise six years ago, tweeted this clarification on the movie:
“To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.”
That’s good news for Matt Smith fans! This is an interesting development since Yates’ initial quote on the Doctor Who movie. We’ll have to wait to see what the storyline may be to see if Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond will be the Companion in the movie. It would seem likely in order to capitalize on the duo’s popularity.
Yates had praised Moffat’s work on Doctor Who, saying:
“Steven Moffat has done a wonderful job and Russell T. Davies who kind of reinvented it the first time around. They’re great. David Tennant was great. Matt Smith is brilliant, he’s marvelous, and very, very clever.”
At the time Yates made that statement last Tuesday, he didn’t hint who his Doctor would ultimately be. Yates gauges that it will take three years to develop a Doctor Who movie according to an interview with the LA Times. He is working with Jane Tranter, the head of BBC Worldwide, on adapting the series and it is probable we’ll see a team-up again between Yates and long-time collaborator Steve Kloves, who penned seven of the eight Harry Potter films.
Yates has just been honored last week by BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing.
