After having parted ways in 2005, it seemed unthinkable that Harvey Weinstein would ever work with Disney again, but the prospect of a live action adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl (one of Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best selling book series) has the two reunited.

“If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” quotes Weinstein in an article by THR. Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal are set to produce the movie that will follow the first two books, while the screenplay will be written by Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

If you haven’t read the books (there are 8, and a few graphic novels too) this is from the writer, Eoin Colfer’s website. I suppose I had better get to reading!

Artemis Fowl is a series of eight science fantasy novels, starring teenage criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II. Colfer summed up the series as: “Die Hard” with fairies. There are eight novels in the series; the first was published in 2001 and the eighth, titled “The Last Guardian” was released in 2012. The eighth and final book is set to be released 10 July 2012. A graphic novel was released in 2007, and a second in 2009.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest for Artemis Fowl.
