We reported last week that longtime Disney collaborator Linda Woolverton was set to pen the script for a live action retelling of Sleeping Beauty, told from the evil queen’s perspective. The film, entitled MALEFICENT has reportedly sparked the interest of Angelina Jolie, who is eying the lead role as Disney’s Mistress of all Evil.

Tim Burton is still rumored to be directing the project, but his official involvement in Maleficent remains up in the air. Sources close to the project indicate that Jolie is very interested in taking on the lead role.

Maleficent, is currently slated to hit theaters in 2012.
