Sony Pictures Animation is working on a sequel to 2009’s Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. This animated success looks to rival Pixar with this new sequel. Though it is reportedly early in the development stages, it has just gotten a swift kick in the pants!
According to the LA Times, Sony has brought on Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to take a stab at the script. This sequel will depart from the source material of the first film and not continue with Ron and Judi Barrett’s follow-up children’s book, Pickles to Pittsburgh. Instead, this film is to be “based on an original idea.”
Word is that the producers for the film will employ a different director on this sequel instead of re-enlisting Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs followed a zany inventor, Flint Lockwood, who invents a machine that turns precipitation into food but a greedy mayor causes this blessing to get out of hand. Cloudy had grossed $125 million domestically with an additional $118 million worldwide.
No release date has been set yet for the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
