Channing Tatum And Ryan Phillippe Up For CAPTAIN AMERICA

Joe Johnston, director of the forthcoming Marvel film – The First Avenger: Captain America stated quite awhile ago that casting for the film would be completed by March 1st, apparently he jumped the gun. While they have managed to cast Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, they still don’t have a ‘chosen one’ for the titular role.

According to Deadline, Marvel is now making a play for Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra). They are reporting that he is definitely in the mix, along with other confirmed candidates that include Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), and Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill).

Another name thrown into the ring for the lead role is Ryan Phillippe (The Way of the Gun). Phillippe confirmed a rumor that he’s auditioning for the role during an exclusive interview with MTV News during the South by Southwest Film Festival.

Phillippe said,

“[I] actually am going in to meet on ‘Captain America,’ which is kind of cool,” . “After Superman, he was kind of my favorite.”

The First Avenger: Captain America is slated to hit theaters on July 22, 2011
