We won’t be seeing Season 6 of True Blood on HBO until probably June, but that means that we have only a few short months to study up on all the new characters coming at us this summer. Today we get up to speed with all the goings-on, so we’ll have time to get them all organized in our minds before the Season 6 premiere.
Here’s a reason for me to watch even if I’d never seen True Blood before – Rutger Hauer has been cast as a Season 6 regular, playing Macklyn, “a mysterious and sinister figure with deep ties to Sookie and Jason” according to TV Line. Though plenty of we sci-fi fans know Hauer from Blade Runner, he will always be Navarre from LadyHawke to me.
Rob Kazinsky (Pacific Rim) has been cast as a series regular and appears to be a heck of a good looking guy. What a surprise, he’s playing Ben, a potential love interest for the half faerie who seems to get all the good looking guys to whom she is not related, Sookie. Ben is a faerie who is “highly charismatic” (I thought they all were?) who will help Sookie and Jason learn more about their parents’ murders. With any luck at all the powers that be will allow the man to retain his British accent. Here’s hoping.
We’ll also be getting some new characters that might be human – it’s hard to be sure from the brief descriptions we have so far. We’ll keep you posted. First up is Arliss Howard (Kale Ingram in Rubicon, which was not sci-fi but was very smart and therefore was popular with sci-fi fans because we are smart) as series regular Truman Burrell, the Governor of Louisiana. He’s described by TV Line as “a good ol’ boy politician who has a major beef with vampires ever since his wife ran off with one, leaving him as a single father to their only daughter.”
Which leads us to Willa, the aforementioned daughter, who will be played by Amelia Rose Blaire. She was in an episode of Grimm Season 1 as a high school kid. The word on her character is that she and her Governor father have long disagreed on vampire rights.
And finally, Jurnee Smollett has been brought on as a series regular, formerly of The Defenders and Friday Night Lights. She’ll play, according to TV Line, Nicole, “a do-gooder who possesses the rosy outlook of someone that life hasn’t beaten down yet. She’s not concerned with money and more concerned with the doing what’s right.” Well, that can’t last for much longer.
Quite a nice group of newbie Trubies. We’ll keep you posted!
