Synopsis: Think you don’t know Vic Armstrong? Wrong! You’ve seen his work in countless films… He’s been a stunt double for James Bond, Indiana Jones and Superman, and he’s directed action scenes for three Bond movies, Mission Impossible 3I Am Legend and the upcoming Thor, to name but a few.

Counting Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger among his friends, and officially credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Most Prolific Stuntman, Vic’s got a lot of amazing stories to tell, and they’re all here in this – the movie memoir of the year!

.

I normally don’t read a lot of biographies. It’s not that I don’t find other people interesting, but I like to fill my head with the delicious nonsense of fantasy and sci-fi rather than the lives of others (probably because they are  infinitely cooler than my own life.) The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman, a memoir by legendary stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong, confirms my suspicions and makes me want a do-over.

Vic has led an extraordinary life, and this book is an incredible ride. From his early life buying and training horses with his father to a few lucky breaks that got him into show business as a stuntman, True Adventures gives us an in-depth look at how hard stunt coordinators and stunt actors work (and play) in the movie business; without their ingenuity and gusto we wouldn’t have some of the amazing movie stunts that have really put the magic in movies. What is more amazing than the journey is the humility of the man behind the action. In spite of doing amazing films like Indiana Jones, and Superman, Vic is incredibly humble; he never forgets that there is always more to learn and speaks so well of many of his colleagues in the industry.

The book wouldn’t be half as successful if not for the work of Robert Sellers who is an amazing ghost writer on this biography. He allows Vic’s voice and personality to shine through, and when you read it, you feel as though you’re just sitting with Vic, a rum and coke in hand, as he tells you about his amazing and blessed life.

Reading this book made me want to revisit so many films from my childhood and see for the first time, films that I’ve never seen before. If you’re a movie buff then then this is a good read. If you’re an ACTION movie buff, then this is a great read.

I give The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman five out of five stars.
