Author Mark King takes us on an adventure in his new novel, Frenzy, with lead character, Daniel Jones, who in the midst of his quiet farm life has stumbled upon a sinister secret that changes his life completely.
I don’t know how I got it in my head that Frenzy was a vampire book, maybe the glossy finish with the blood dripping of the title but I didn’t have any clue what the book was about going into it. The book isn’t about vampires. I’m not knocking vampire stories, but this book is much more creative, much more compelling and its mysterious Over-seers much more menacing than any vampire.
Without being too spoilery, Daniel Jones begins the story as a small town farm boy who uncovers a secret so big that he’s forced to abandon his family and friends because his life depends on it, and that’s really all I want to say about the plot, because it’s so fun to have it unfold without a whole lot of prior knowledge.
The story is not overly complicated. It’s very straightforward and would easily be enjoyed by an adult, young adult or older teenage reader who could handle a portion of graphic violence. It’s fast-paced, well imagined and a great page turner.
I highly recommend Frenzy and thought the story line simple yet effective. It’s a great start to what I’m sure will shape up to be a wonderful series. It does end in such a way that leaves the story open for more. It doesn’t come to a full resolution in the story that plays out in this first book. It reaches a next stage, but at 224 pages it feels like it ends, just when it’s getting started. I really would have liked for it to have continued on to a bigger resolution and for that reason only do I deduct one star.
So that’s saying something. This is a book to get and read and support this small publishing venture, because it will leave you wanting more and hopefully, we’ll get it!
I give Frenzy Four Out of Five Stars.
