Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM Moves Forward; Sharlto Copley To Star

Just last week, we brought you a mysterious viral teaser video from Wired magazine’s iPad edition, that was directed by Neill Blomkamp. The vast majority of the internet was wondering if the video had anything to do with the next big-screen project on the director’s slate, or if he simply produced the teaser for his own amusement. No matter which was the intention of the video, it had everyone buzzing.

Did it have anything to do with Elysium? We still don’t know for certain but, it’s unlikely. What we do know for certain, thanks to Deadline is that Blomkamp is moving forward with Elysium, and he’s “gettin’ the band back together” – the director who made a huge splash in the world of sci-fi cinema with District 9 is once again joining forces with the star of that film, Sharlto Copley.

I’m sure the film won’t have any difficulty finding am interested studio and distribution but, an insider told the Deadline:

“Neill is taking meetings all over town. There is a lot of interest from every studio.”

Last year, Blomkamp said of Elysium:

“I’ve got one science fiction idea that I’m absolutely in love with, which I’m pretty sure is going to be my next film. 99% sure…It’s totally original, it’s my own story…It’s set on another planet, but it’s cool. It’s violent, very violent, and very unique hopefully. We’ll see.”

The role that Copley will play in the film has not been announced, and no other actors have yet been cast.

Elysium is slated to hit theaters in 2012.
