It seems as though it has been an eternal struggle to get the reboot of Red Sonja made. A long time ago, director Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World) and his then girlfriend Rose McGowan (Conan the Barbarian) had been attempting to put together a big-screen adaptation with McGowan set to star as the titular heroine, that project fell completely apart, late last year due to what Rodriguez said were financing problems.
Now, producer Avi Lerner (Conan the Barbarian, Kane & Lynch) has revealed to Empire that the project is spinning back into production and that Simon West (The Mechanic) is in talks to helm the film. Lerner also said that he has his sights sent on Amber Heard (Drive Angry 3D, The Rum Diary) to become the new Red Sonja:
“We’re talking to a few girls for the role of Sonja, but we just finished a movie called Drive Angry with Amber Heard, and I want to see her. She’s my favorite for the role. Amber is the new Red Sonja… but she doesn’t know it yet!”
Red Sonja is currently in development.
