Alphas Enlists a Special Guest Star, a Recurring Guest Star and Releases an Extended Clip

Earlier this month we told you what the creator of the new Syfy series Alphas had to say about the show, but it really only led to more questions. Happily, Syfy has now released a nice long (almost nine minutes) promo about the series, and it looks like it will be a great fit with its other great current scripted series, Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Haven. Settle in and check this out:

Although there’s been no official press release, those of us who follow Alaina Huffman (Stargate: Universe) on Twitter picked up on a few mentions last week:

Alaina Huffman AlainaHuffman To answer some of your questions… I’m going to be in TO for work, just not sure if I’m allowed to tell yet. I’ll keep u posted! 12 Jun

Alaina Huffman AlainaHuffman Early to work (518 am call time) but I wrapped at 230 not bad. gonna get out and about in TO this week!

And then finally this addition – the hashtag tells it all:

Alaina Huffman AlainaHuffman Early to work (518 am call time) but I wrapped at 230 not bad. gonna get out and about in TO this week! #ALPHAS 14 Jun

followed by this just yesterday:

Alaina Huffman AlainaHuffman … I’m Working on #Alphas. New on @Syfy … premiers in July.

Well that’s pretty straightforward.  Syfy will likely be promoting that shortly. In the meantime, Syfy has released news about a recurring guest star, familiar to those of us who loved Syfy’s series The Dresden Files. It’s  Valerie Cruz (also of True Blood, Dexter, Off the Map and more) and here’s the press release, which gives even more information about Ms. Cruz and about the upcoming series.

NEW YORK- June 22, 2011 – Syfy has signed actress Valerie Cruz (Off the Map, True Blood, Dexter) as a recurring guest star on its newest original series Alphas, it was announced today. The action drama from Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television is currently shooting in Toronto and will premiere Monday, July 11 @ 10:00PM ET/PM.

Valerie Cruz will portray Special Agent Kathy Sullivan, an employee of the Department of Defense whose exact role and intentions are a mystery. She will first appear in the third episode of the series entitled “Cause and Effect” premiering Monday, July 25, 2011 at 10:00 PM ET/PT.

Cruz is well known for portraying multiple complex roles on the small screen over the last decade including Grace Santiago on FX’s Nip/Tuck and Sylvia Prado on Showtime’s Dexter.  She also starred in the Syfy original series The Dresden Files. Most recently she portrayed Dr. Zita Alvarez in ABC’s midseason entry Off the Map.  She is represented by David Rose of Innovative Artists and Pearl Hanan.

Alphas follows a clandestine group of average everyday citizens with amazing abilities operating within the U.S. Department of Defense. Led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (Emmy Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn), the team investigates cases that point to others with abilities like theirs, and as they work against the clock to solve this new brand of crime, they must prevent their own personality differences and disparate backgrounds from interfering with their missions.

In addition to Strathairn (Temple Grandin, Good Night, and Good Luck) and Cruz, the ensemble cast of Alphas includes Malik Yoba (New York Undercover, Why Did I Get Married?), Warren Christie (October Road), Azita Ghanizada (Castle), Ryan Cartwright  (Mad Men, Bones) and Laura Mennell (Watchmen).

Alphas consists of 12 episodes including the 90-minute pilot directed by Jack Bender (Emmy nominated director and executive producer of Lost). The series is a production of Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television. Executive Producers are Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand), Ira Steven Behr (The 4400) and Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein for BermanBraun.
