A&E May Be Opening Up the BATES MOTEL on Your TV

And the news from the Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour just keeps coming. During its presentation, A&E announced that it is in the early stages of developing a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s famous-for-the-shower-scene-and-creepy-mother-issues thriller Psycho entitled Bates Motel, from Universal TV and writer Anthony Cipriano.

Deadline reports that the series is to center around Norman Bates from his childhood through his teen years, and the horrible treatment he receives from his mother Norma and her lover. Which is meant to explain a lot.

It won’t be the first time a network has tried to make a series out of one of the more famous stops on the Universal Studios tour. I’m thinking it will need to have more than a creepy kid and an abusive mom to get people to tune in, but hopefully there will be more by the time it gets to a pilot.

Good luck to A&E, and thanks for thinking of horror fans when making your development choices.
