Abrams and Star Trek Cast Talk About The Sequel

In celebration of the release of Star Trek on Blu-ray and DVD, Paramount held a special event in Los Angeles in which director J.J. Abrams and various members of the cast were on hand to present some special features to a group of fans and journalists.

Overall, they seem to be staying hush-hush on the Trek sequel, as it is currently in the script stage, with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (along with producer Damon Lindelof) working up ideas for where to take the Starship Enterprise and her intrepid crew.

Director J.J. Abrams explained that even though he’s not 100% committed to the project, he can’t see someone else directing:

“The truth is, the idea of anyone else directing the next Star Trek film breaks my heart. I had the most fun ever with these people. But, it’s impossible to know when the script is done. That’s the time to look at it and ask, “is this the right thing for the movie? Is it the right thing for me? My family?” and all that stuff. It’s so hard to know a year out with no script in existence if I should direct the movie.”

Actor John Cho, who played Sulu, had this to say (jokingly) about wanting to see Khan make an appearance in the second film

“He is the baddest of them all in my opinion and the coolest hair cut. I’m ready to bring that cut back for my own self.”

And finally, the Elder Spock, Leonard Nimoy said that he isn’t expecting a call from Abrams for the sequel:

“They have Zachary Quinto. I was useful to make the bridge between the original and the new and that’s done, this cast of characters is in great shape. They’re a wonderful, talented bunch of people and the chemistry between them is appropriate. They’ve got it! They know how to do it. They’ve done it well in this movie and they’ll do it again well in the future movies. I think I served a purpose and I’m happy that I was in it … It’s not a question of whether I’d want to be [in the movie]. If I get a phone call I’ll answer the phone, but I’m not expecting that call to come.”
