ABC’s V Taking Aim At Obama?

Intrepretations about ABC’s new show “V”, a reboot of the 80’s original TV series, taking aim at  President Obama’s administration are flying wild.  Some critics are calling “V” a “barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president’s supporters and delight his detractors”.  Since the original series in the 80’s was an allegory depending on intrepretation, focused on Communist Soviet Union or the Nazi movement, could it be that this time around, a similar statement is being made?  Is there any truth to these rumors?

The Visitors arrive, promising hope, change, and coincidentally enough, universal healthcare not unlike the Obama presidential campaign and administration. Their leader is attractive and charismatic as well who leverages the media to her advantage.  On the surface, similarities can be drawn between Obama and the Visitors.

One might even be suspicious of the line-up of the programming schedule as the premiere of “V” on ABC was immediately followed by the airing of “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama” on HBO in honor of the Obama election one year ago.

Fox News’ personalities Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, and Glenn Beck have even declared their support of “V” as a critique of “Obamacare”.

What does ABC have to say about “V” being a political allegory of the Obama administration?  Writer and executive producer, Scott Peters claims that since the show had been in production since 2007,what was going on in reality was “never really a factor,” for “V”.  Peters adds:

“There’s no political message being shoved down anyone’s throat.”

Morena Baccarin, who plays the alien leader Anna, had this to say in response to parallels between Anna and Obama:

“I don’t think we’re saying Anna is President Obama. But she is the leader of her people, and she is coming down to Earth and offering healthcare, and offering cures for diseases, and things that sort of clean out and give people hope, and there are definite parallels to be drawn and our intentions are to create a show that people relate to. And I think this is something that’s been on people’s minds, even before Obama… finding hope again, and healthcare, and finding a leader, and someone who can save us from the hole we’ve gotten ourselves into.”

A reporter even tried to address this question of political commentary through “V” at a White House Press Conference on Friday.  Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs dodged the question, saying that he himself didn’t even watch the show.
