As the tenth and final season of the CW’s Smallville comes to a close this May, the most eagerly anticipated question for fans has been, “Will Superman fly?” Show co-creator Al Gough told TV Guide in a recent interview that they had always planned to end the series with Clark Kent becoming the Man of Steel:
“The last scene of the last episode was always going to be Clark putting on the suit and flying off into his destiny. And my guess is that, when we all see the finale, it will be some version of that.”
Gough created Smallville with Miles Millar back in 2001. The two left the show after the seventh season but maintain good contact with the subsequent showrunners. Gough adds:
“The wonderful thing about the show is that the people who work on it are just as passionate about it today as they were 10 years ago. Kelly [Souders] and Brian [Peterson] found a gear for the show and made it work. I know it wasn’t easy. I’m certainly grateful to them that they were able to do that.”
Co-executive producer Kelly Souders kept tight-lipped about the finale and would tease with this:
“There is a very, very special moment that we love, and everyone who is looking for that moment won’t be disappointed.”
But for Tom Welling, the show hasn’t been just about that moment where Superman flies off to be a superhero:
“This show, to me, has always been about Clark Kent — it hasn’t been about Superman. And it was very important at the end that we make sure that we wrap up the Clark Kent story.”
One step closer to Superman status, Clark uses a familiar location to switch his identity. Check out these phone booth pics from the April 22nd episode, “Booster.”
Smallville returns with new episodes on April 15 and concludes with a two-hour season finale on May 13, 2011.
Tonight, the CW airs the pilot episode of the Smallville series. Not a bad way to wrap up the series than to reminisce about the beginning, right?
