LOST Producers Reflect On Last Week’s Episode, The Story Of Jacob And The Man In Black

Last week’s episode of ABC’s “Lost” showed us the story of Jacob and the mysterious Man in Black. “Lost” executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof reflect on their favorite moments of the episode entitled, “Across the Sea”. Do their chosen moments align with yours?

For Cuse, his favorite moment was when the woman known to Jacob and his twin brother as their “mother” (Allison Janney) tells Jacob, “Every question I answer will simply lead to another question.” Cuse explains:

“That was a pointed way of us saying [to the viewer], ‘We are answering questions, but we could never close the loop of questions on this show.’”

Lindelof chose the scene where Jacob and the Boy in Black are hiding in the jungle when they come across “others” on the island. Lindelof likes what this scene does for these characters:

“It’s weird to think that at one point in his life Jacob was scared, since we always think of him as the ultimate force on the island. That was our attempt to say, ‘It’s all a matter of perspective.’”

Titus Welliver, who plays the Man in Black, says that his favorite part of the episode is the origin of Smokey. Welliver says:

“We actually got to see how [Smokey] came to life. That was big.”

Michael Emerson’s, aka Ben Linus on the show, thought that the revelation about the significance of the glowing cave to be “a huge gamble”:

“It’s a little bit ‘out there’ and doesn’t have a precedent on any show I can think of.”
