‘Heroes’ May Have Competition With Syfy’s ‘Alphas’

syfynewlogoWatch out, “Heroes”.  The Syfy channel has just green-lit a 90-minute pilot for “Alphas

“Alphas” began as a project called “Section 8” in 2007, but after network bidding wars and the writers strike, the fate of the project was up in the air.

Syfy took the initiative with BermanBraun Television who suggested “Section 8” and the project was picked up again. Mark Stern, VP of Original Programming at Syfy, explains their interest in “Section 8”:

“What we loved about this idea is that it played into a new way of approaching the superhero genre: the idea of ordinary people who have one slightly extraordinary feature about them and are singularly not so special but together can do extraordinary things was very attractive.”

Now titled, “Alphas”, the project is being redeveloped for Syfy and Universal Cable Productions.  “Alphas” will be written by Zak Penn (“X-Men: The Last Stand”) and Michael Karnow.

Lloyd Braun of BermanBraun Television on snagging the “Alphas” project:

“We’re thrilled this has remained in the NBC Universal family. Being at Syfy allows Zak and Michael to really take their gloves off and explore this arena no-holds-barred.”
