Earlier this month, we brought you the news that director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) had been confirmed as the director of the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures reboot of Superman (a.k.a. Superman: Man of Steel) being overseen by producer/director Christopher Nolan (Inception, Untitled Batman Project).
At the time, THR reported that the script, written by David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan was rumored to have, like “Superman Returns,” a Richard Donner Superman connection. In the movie’s case, it’s a villain connection: General Zod.
Director Zack Snyder recently spoke with the folks over at BadTaste and he denied that General Zod would be the villian in his forthcoming Supes film… sort of. When asked if Zod would be the villain or if that was just a rumor –
Snyder said,
“For now it’s just a rumor.”
Some people around the web are touting that statement as a flat-out debunking of the THR report that Zod would be the villian. Quite frankly, I think that because he qualified it by saying “For now”, instead of “Absolutely not, that’s just a rumor”, proves that it has (at least) a bit of validity.
Snyder also talked a bit about what he planned to do with his version of The Man of Steel:
“I think that you have to do your best to describe this world and that the character of Superman needs to be relevant again, without disrespecting his mythology. That’s my goal.”
The director also told filmsactu,
“As I have already explained, the film will focus on the early days of Superman, so there will be no links with the other films. This is not a remake then. Similarly, although I still cannot talk about the script, I can assure you that this new Superman will not be based on any comic book in particular.”
Snyder has mentioned that this new Superman reboot won’t be tied to the Richard Donner or Bryan Singer films. Snyder also hasn’t publicly expressed interest in members of the Smallville television series’ cast, he hasn’t stated anything against the possibility of them being a part of his film either.
Superman (a.k.a. Superman: Man of Steel) is slated to hit theaters in 2012.
