“Time-shifting” is a nifty new word, no? Sadly, it’s not used to describe a newfound mutant ability, but rather the phenomenon of DVR viewing affecting ratings for television shows. This new nomenclature is used to describe a viewing of a showup to seven days past its original airtime.
With the widespread use of DVRs, networks should consider this portion of show-viewing with heavier weight. Sci-fi shows in particular seem to have strong “time-shift” ratings that should be considered despite comparatively lower ratings than other shows.
According to TVbytheNumber’s:
“In the last full week before Thanksgiving, Fringe (43%), Smallville (40%) and The Office (34%) posted the largest percentage ratings increases in Live Plus Seven day DVR viewing from their Live Plus Same Day adults 18-49 ratings (November 16-22).”
Other shows like “Heroes”, “V”, and “FlashForward” also added 30% to their viewership numbers. In the meantime, we wait till our shows come back on in the new year.
I know that I, for one, am a DVR queen. I almost never watch anything live anymore! Do you “time-shift”, too?
