You read that right! Even though the ratings for Fox’s “Fringe” suffered when the show migrated to its current Thursday time slot, word has come down that Fox has renewed the show for a third season. But according to J. J. Abrams, “Fringe” could have a predestined end date a la “Lost”. Here’s what he told reporters on the Television Critics Associations tour:
“Just as with ‘Lost’, we didn’t get to a place until the third season where we were saying, ‘OK, we need to know where halfway is. And I feel like that’s something that, … if we’re lucky enough to continue going, I do think that at a certain point it would be a really smart thing to start to say, ‘OK, let’s figure out … what the actual date is so we sort of know … how far we should push things.’ ”
What will Abrams say about the second season finale?
“I think the whole alternate-universe idea is at the core of what’s going to be happening. Without giving anything away, I think that the ending of this second season is, I think, richer and better and deeper than what we did last year. I mean, last year was definitely shocking, but I think the end of this year is different, but I think equally impactful.”
“There are certain things that I think happen that I wouldn’t want to talk about that might resolve certain stories, but for the most part I think the fun about ‘Fringe’—which I think some episodes that are coming up this season and certainly the ending take advantage of—is that sort of unlimited possibility. Not to say there aren’t rules and things that are happening that have to be abided by, but the fun of this show that’s specific to Fringe is the fact that we can go to certain places and do certain things that you couldn’t normally do on a show and not have it be ‘The Wacky Episode.’ Every episode is a little bit the wacky episode.”
Abrams is particularily excited about the April Fool’s Day ep when the show returns with new episodes:
“It’s one of my favorite episodes that we’ve done. It is particularly retro and weird. It’s a really cool episode.”
“Fringe” returns with seven new episodes on April 1, Thursdays 9/8pm C on Fox.
