Until today we had seen Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who exactly twice. Once during the 50th anniversary special, though that was just a look at his intense eyes. The second time, of course, was when he was freshly regenerated from Matt Smith‘s Doctor.
Today we get to see him on the first day of filming Season 8, yesterday, as we mentioned in yesterday’s Doctor Who post. Here he is with Jenna Coleman on set, still in his Eleventh Doctor ensemble:
According to the BBC, “arriving on set for his first full day, Peter said ‘New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world’, while executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat heralded the beginning of ‘the Capaldi era’.
They are currently shooting episodes one and two of the upcoming season, both directed by Ben Wheatley, with the first episode written by showrunner Moffat, and the second written by Phil Ford. Filming for the season is expected to continue until August 2014.
The second new image of Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor is on the cover of the upcoming issue of Doctor Who Magazine, available on iTunes beginning January 9. This shot was taken during a break from shooting the regeneration scene:
In the issue, Capaldi reportedly states “I was five when the show started… I don’t remember Doctor Who not being part of my life, and it became a part of growing up, along with The Beatles, National Health spectacles, and fog. And it runs deep. It’s in my DNA…” I can’t wait to see what he does with this Doctor.
Doctor Who, starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, premieres its Season 8 likely in August or September, 2014, on BBC America.
