John Barrowman (“Torchwood”, “Doctor Who”) is most well known for his acting, but he is a triple threat, being blessed with the ability to also whisk us away with his song and dance. It was only a matter of time before his genres mixed – Barrowman originally composed this Doctor-themed song for a live show:
“I first sang this version of the song at a concert in Wales for, amongst others, David Tennant and Russell T. Davies, and they loved it … We’ve given it new lyrics to make the song relevant to Captain Jack and his relationship with the Doctor. It’s quirky, it’s funny and it’s really good. I’m terribly proud of it.”
“The Doctor and I” is a play off of “The Wizard and I” from “Wicked”, the musical, from the perspective of Barrowman’s Torchwood/Doctor Who character, Captain Jack Harkness. This ditty sings of Harkness’ relationship with the Doctor.

You can purchase this track on iTunes as a bonus track on Barrowman’s self-titled solo album that has just been released.
Stephen Schwartz, who is the original composer of “The Wizard and I”, found it a great compliment for Barrowman’s treatment of his song:
“I have been lucky enough to have the terrific John Barrowman do it with two of my songs, the enchanting new duet arrangement of ‘So Close’ from Enchanted (with Jodie Prenger’s fantastic voice blending perfectly with John’s) and John’s ‘wicked’ re-imagining of The Wizard … Thank you, John, for making this songwriter very happy.”
Barrowman has won acclaim for his role as ZaZa in the stage presentation of “La Café Aux Folles” last year and was also recently named among the Most Powerful Figures in Theater in The Stage 100 List.
