Last night delighted us with the return of SyFy’s hit original summer series “Warehouse 13” and there is always that question that hangs above any male and female partnership. Will they or won’t they hook up? I say “Hell NO” to a Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) hook-up and I’m glad to hear that both actors are on the same side of this argument as I… more or less.
McClintock clearly defines his character’s relationship with Myka as a core friendship to drive the heart of the show:
“Pete’s steady as she goes in his relationship with Myka. They’ve reached a pretty nice middle ground, where he still drives her crazy, but if he were any other way, she wouldn’t be able to deal with it. She loves the way he is, even though he drives her nuts. It’s so funny, Joanne and I were having a conversation the other day, and I said to her, ‘Does it drive you nuts that I never take anything seriously?’ She said, ‘It makes me want to stab you in the eyeball with a pen, but I wouldn’t want you to be any other way, because I need it.”
“It’s the same thing with the characters. Really, what you see is what you get. Joanne and I are great friends. We don’t always like each other, but we love each other. It really lends itself to what the show is at its heart, which is, it’s a show about mystic toys.”
Kelly seems to feel that the development of romance is inappropriate at this point in their characters’ relationship, but leaves the door open:
“I think any human relationship, any interesting human relationship between two people is complex and it truly takes time to develop anything that’s worth its salt. [For] us to explore the romantic part of it without first exploring the complexities of these two people, the partnership that they’re creating and the friendship that they’re creating, I think would just short-change everyone.”
For me, you can tell by my commentary sections of the “Warehouse 13: In Case You Missed It” recaps that I am really not a fan of the actual central characters of the show, but they are necessary to make the show go round. I like McClintock’s comedic character fine, but Myka’s whiney sibling interaction with Pete just rubs me the wrong way. I am hoping that this second season evolves their relationship to a non-whiney sort of status. Romance will definitely NOT solve this predicament so it had better not head in that direction!
Watch “Warehouse 13” on SyFy, Tuesdays at 9/8 C.
