Last month, we brought you news that Daniel Radcliffe (Woman in Black, Harry Potter) has told Guillermo del Toro that he’d like “to get involved with” GDT’s take on the Carlo Collodi fairy tale, Pinocchio. Del Toro is co-directing the film with Mark Gustafson (The Fantastic Mr. Fox) to make a 3D, stop-motion film with the Jim Henson Company.
We’ve got a sneak peek at the artwork going into the visuals of this film care of EW. The artistic vision is heavily influenced by artist Gris Grimly. Check it out below.

How will del Toro’s version distinguish itself from the well known Disney animated film? Del Toro explains in another interview with EW:
“Well, the Disney version is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. What I’m going for is a PG-13 — more adolescent, more teenage. I hesitate to say just darker, because it’s not just darker. It is a tale that is adapted to a more complex reality, more complex ethical questions. It’s more a tale for youth than a tale for just kids.”
Production for this story set in Italy between WWI and WWII is scheduled with a one-year production timeline and will begin in the summer of 2013.
