The Winchester brothers will be getting to know the Campbell side of their family on the upcoming season of the CW’s Supernatural. Show runner Sera Gamble stated previously that Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) will be “exploring the [Campbell] family tree” as their grandfather, Samuel Campbell (Mitch Pileggi), returns.
If you’re asking, “Wait, isn’t Sam stuck in a cage with Lucifer?” and “Isn’t their grandfather dead?” You are right on and it has not been explained yet how Sam or the boys’ grandfather return, but I am sure we will find out soon enough!
The Campbell side of the family is to “play a huge role this season”. Gamble explains:
“Sam and Dean have a cousin they’ve never met, so they’re going to realize that they’re part of a history, part of a larger family. It’s not just the two of them in the bloodline.”
Sam and Dean’s grandfather had been killed by Azazel, the Yellow-Eyed Demon. Samuel did not live to see his grandsons except for the time when Dean traveled back in time to prevent the Angel Anna from killing John and Mary to prevent Sam and Dean from being born. Samuel did not know that Dean was his grandson then, but from the looks of these recently released pics from the season premiere, that’s about to change.
