As SciFi Mafia reported to you in February, Neil Gaiman (“Stardust”, “Coraline”) had been tapped to write an episode of the BBC’s “Doctor Who” for this current season. Over the weekend, Gaiman posted a picture of himself, sitting with showrunner Steven Moffat and “Blackadder” creator Richard Curtis while holding up the script for the episode he penned.
Gaiman cleverly obstructed the title of the episode, but you can’t deny fans’ excitement about the episode. He tells the BBC about the experience of writing a “Doctor Who” episode:
“I don’t know what it’s like to be God – obviously. Until that very first moment when you get to sit down and type the words in your script: INTERIOR. TARDIS. Suddenly I got a very good idea of what it must feel like. I went: ‘I’m writing it now this scene in the TARDIS. I’m writing it!’ And that was amazing, it was wonderful.”
The pic was taken during a read-through with Moffat to tighten up the script. The tagline to the another take of the same photo reads, “Who are these three middle aged men? Dear God, what are they plotting? Can no one save us?”
Gaiman says that the episode will be shooting soon:
“It’s going to be shooting in August and we were going through it and figuring out ways that money could be saved and ways we could have some things happen faster… It was a little bit flabby.”
Gaiman also addressed author Terry Pratchett’s thoughts on “Doctor Who” not being “classified as science fiction” in an SFX Magazine article:
“Doctor Who has never pretended to be hard science fiction. At best Doctor Who is a fairytale, with fairytale logic about this wonderful man in this big blue box who at the beginning of every story lands somewhere where there is a problem…”
Other than these sentiments and news of when the episode will be shooting, Gaiman did not give an inch on what his “Doctor Who” episode is about… except that it will be “on television” and “in colour”!
