MGM’s RoboCop Remake Has Director Jose Padilha In Its Crosshairs

Back in December, we told you that MGM‘s restructuring plan was approved by the bankruptcy court. The studio’s emergence from bankruptcy was one step forward in getting long-stalled out projects up and running, and headed towards the big-screen. Bond 23 being one of them, and a planned remake of RoboCop with the previously attached director, Darren Aronofsky (The Wolverine, Black Swan).

Aronofsky said back then that he was still thinking about resurrecting the brutally murdered cop turned super-human cyborg:

“Well, ‘RoboCop’ may still happen one day, who knows? It’s MGM and hopefully they’ll clear their stuff up and I’m still interested. David Self wrote a great script, but the company went under so…”

Now, Deadline reports that MGM is in negotiations with Brazilian director José Padilha (Elite Squad, Elite Squad 2) to helm Robocop‘s return to the big-screen. Aronofsky will now be unavailable due to his schedule with The Wolverine.

RoboCop is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
