Marvel Comics Go Augmented Reality; Introduce New Infinite Digital Comics

In an effort to keep brick and mortar retailers relative in this new digital comic age, Marvel Comics is introducing an AR (augmented reality) aspect to their comics in print. At certain points in the book this technology will prompt readers to open up the Marvel app on their iOS or Android powered devices and point to the page, unlocking 3D character models and story commentaries by the artists and writers. The new AR-enabled issues will kick off with Avengers vs. X-Men #1 in April. Alongside the AR launch Marvel is also introducing Marvel Infinite, which will unlock digital-only side that go along with the issue.

below is a video of the new Marvel AR technology in action.

[The Shakedown]

It’s a pretty interesting way to add new content to traditional comics, and I hope that other publishers follow this example with finding some way to keep print alive. I’m a supporter of digital distribution, because I think it makes comics cheaper and allows for new artists to find their voices. That said, I have many fond memories perusing the boxes and shelves of my local comic book store, and I don’t want to see them vanish completely thanks to digital distribution. I’d like to someday introduce my son or daughter to comics with visits to my favorite shops.
