CBS Home Entertainment has confirmed that it will be releasing all seven seasons of the hit sci-fi television show Star Trek: The Next Generation on high-definition Blu-ray. The Blu-ray discs will be hitting stores starting in 2012, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series, which debuted in September of 1987.
StarTrek.com reports that TNG will debut on Blu-ray on January 31st, 2012 with a single disc, high-def sampler of several episodes entitled Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Next Level. The sampler will include the feature-length version of the series pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint”, as well the fan-favorite episodes “Sins of the Father” and “The Inner Light,” followed by the full season-one Blu-ray later in 2012, and subsequent seasons to follow. CBS is returning to the original film negatives, and the visual effects will be recompositioned, instead of being upconverted from videotape. The final results will be be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio, creating true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects.
Ken Ross, vice-president of CBS Home Entertainment said,
“Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.”
