If you haven’t seen the very excellent Looper yet, go before too many plot points make it out into the atmosphere. It is smart, twisty, well-told, well-acted, and beautifully shot; it’s definitely worth your time and money to go to the theater and not wait for the Blu-ray/DVD. But we’re recommending you actually go to the theater twice; the second time, go see it with director Rian Johnson commenting in your ear.
Here’s what he says on his Tumblr about what he calls (on the recording) the “In-Theatre Commentary Track Thing”:
I recorded a commentary track to be downloaded, put on an ipod and listened to in the theater as you’re watching Looper. This is an odd thing I tried with Bloom, and have gotten a few requests for it again, so here it is. It is totally different from the commentary track that will be on the Blu/DVD, a bit more technical and detailed. Needless to say, this is NOT to be listened to on a first viewing, or before you’ve seen the film. Also, please work it so that a glowing screening is never out of your pocket during the movie.
Listen to the introduction before heading to the theater, it has instructions. And lemme know how it works.
It’s a fun, entertaining, and interesting listen (still, of course, after seeing the movie) even if you aren’t actually watching the movie, but obviously it’s going to work a lot better at the theater. Especially when he says things like “you’re going to see my mom here, not that one, not that one, not that one, THERE! There she is!” If anything, it really makes you want to go see it again. Well done yet again, Mr. Johnson.
