Last week, we brought you the news when director Joss Whedon‘s superhero team-up The Avengers crossed the $700 million mark in worldwide box office, swiftly heading towards breaking the $1 billion mark. Now, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have managed to score another $100 million + over its second weekend in theaters, pummeling the paltry $75 million brought in by James Cameron’s Avatar, and setting a new second weekend record.
Walt Disney Pictures reports that The Avengers is set to cross $1.32 billion (with a B) worldwide, after the weekend totals are all tallied, making it the first Marvel film to reach $1 billion and the fifth Disney release to do so. If people keep packing the theaters to see The Avengers, they might have a shot at beating Titanic‘s $2,183,394,188 worldwide box office, and maybe even Avatar‘s $2,782,275,172 worldwide box office.
The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston is in theaters now!
