We told you last month that Fox had made a series commitment for Gotham, reportedly an “origin story” series about Commissioner Gordon of Batman fame, along with some villains, but no Bruce Wayne. It sounded like it could be really great. But wait, it gets better.
At Fox‘s presentation to the Television Critics Association yesterday, Fox chairman Kevin Reilly announced that the series will include a young Bruce Wayne: “The show will track Bruce from a child (around 12 years old) until he puts on a cape.” It will also include all of the classic Batman villains and heroes.
According to Deadline, we’ll be seeing the Riddler, Catwoman, and the Penguin. “We will see how they get to become what they are as Gotham is teetering on the edge,” Reilly said. “It is an operatic soap with a larger than life quality.”
While “an operatic soap” makes me simultaneously giggle and roll my eyes, it really does sound like it could be terrific. Deadline further reported that a writers room for the series is expected to be in place next month. Danny Cannon (The Tomorrow People, Nikita) is directing the pilot.
We’ll keep you posted.
