“Juan of the dead, we kill your beloved ones.” Can you think of a better tag line? Oh yes, zombies are a worldwide phenomenon. Juan of the Dead is a zombie comedy out of Cuba and has been a festival fave since premiering in Toronto last September. It follows a “40-year-old slacker who, when a zombie outbreak hits Cuba, turns a quick buck slaying families’ shambling undead.”
Critics have viewed this film from director Alejandro Brugues as more than just capitalizing on the zombie craze but as also a political allegory about Cuba and “its inhabitants’ knack of making ends meet.”
Variety reports that Focus Features’ digital distribution arm, Focus World, has picked up Juan of the Dead for a release stateside. The film will show on the festival circuit in the states, followed by a theatrical run from April on distributed through Latinofusion. The film has also scored deals in Germany, Russia, the UK, and Japan.
