Long-time Justice League member Red Tornado has been given his own series, DC Comics writer Kevin VanHook has revealed.

The superhero, who was first introduced in Justice League Of America #64 over 40 years ago, will star in a six-issue spinoff starting in September.

“He’s challenging because of the fact that he’s typically been portrayed as having such an even keel which leads to a prince charming problem,” VanHook told CBR.

“The really nice guy can be boring if you’re not careful. It’s fun to see what happens when we see that he’s got an edge to him.”

It was also confirmed that the mini-series will develop the character’s backstory, while remaining true to perviously published material.

“I’d say I’m being pretty faithful. The new aspect is the introduction of some other players like Red Volcano,” he added. “They’re going to change his playing field quite a bit.”

DC’s Red Tornado #1 is scheduled to arrive on September 2.
