Synopsis: If you’ve ever heard of the Knights of the Old Republic video games and comics but didn’t know where to start–this is it!
The Republic and the Mandalorians are at war! Jedi are joining the fight, despite the noninterference stance of the Council. One Jedi, however, has found himself on the front lines against his wishes-the peace-loving Zayne Carrick has been drafted!
Today we’re taking a look at Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – War #1, a book that takes place before the events of the first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game that was released on X-Box back in 2003. The war between the Sith Empire and the Old Republic has just kicked off, and Zayne Carrick finds himself fighting alongside Republic shock troops against the Mandalorians.
Andrea Mutti‘s pencils and Michael Atiyeh‘s colors are amazing and capture the real spirit and sweeping drama of an epic Star Wars story. We’re thrust right into the middle of the fighting in issue #1, and in just a few short panels we get a good measure of our protagonist. Zayne is a former Jedi who has been sent to war against his will. We don’t know why he’s not a Jedi anymore, but one thing is for sure, it’s not his aggressive nature. Zayne is the very definition of a pacifist, saving allies and enemies alike.
We don’t get much of the way in story in this first issue, in spite of all the action and drama of the battle scenes. Zayne is the only character who gets any attention, and even that is sparse. He actually came off as a bit of a bumbler in way over his head. His good intentions seem to get him into more trouble, and I found him a little annoying in this first issue.
Negative comments aside, I love the art in this book and I like John Jackson Miller as a writer of both Knight Errant and the original KotOR game. It just seems that this book sets the series off to an awkward start. I feel like they could have delivered a better first issue to the series, but I don’t count this creative team out just yet.
I give Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – War #1 Three out of Five Stars.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – War #1 goes on sale on January 11th.
